Chapter 36

“You want me to do what?”

“Hand this letter to the mom.”

Elena looked at Travis, her pretty brown eyes questioning him. “You can’t be serious? We’re talking about the mother of the two missing children?”

“Yes.”

She lifted both her eyebrows at the same time. “The one who was pulled out of the ocean?”

He nodded. “Yes, her. Now, just do it, please.”

Elena swallowed. She wasn’t ready to let this go yet. There were more questions. “Why?”

“Does it matter?” Travis said. “I will give you seven hundred and fifty thousand, remember? That means not asking any more questions.”

“But, Travis… this seems… I need to know what the letter says, no?”

He shook his head. “The less you know, the better it is for you—for your own protection.”

“Okay, I guess that makes sense in case something goes wrong,” she said, looking down at the letter in her hand.

“You have access,” he said. “You have the key to her room and can let yourself in. Tell the security officer you’re cleaning the room. Then, hand it to her as soon as you’re inside.”

“No. I can’t do that,” she said, handing the letter back to her brother. “They’ll come after me, asking me questions.”

He placed it back into her hand. “You say you found it in a bathroom, one of the public ones, and you thought you would give it to her. Just bat your eyelashes a lot, and they’ll believe you.”

“Why not give it to the police, and then they can give it to her?”

“I want to make sure she reads it. They might keep it from her, so she won’t even have a chance.”

Elena sighed; she gave the letter back to him again. “I don’t know, Travis. This is… it’s just….”

“Money enough to buy yourself a house,” he said luringly. “No more having to clean up other people’s messes.”

That made her stop talking. She stared at him, and he could tell she was thinking about it. She just needed one more little push.

“Maybe you could buy yourself a pair of Jimmy Choo’s like you’ve always wanted. Remember the red ones we saw in that magazine once?”

“Give me that,” she said and pulled the letter out of his hand.

“That’s my girl,” he said and smiled. He kissed her forehead, then whispered. “Now, go before anyone sees us together.”

She took off, grabbed her cart, and pushed it down the hallway with the letter tucked inside her front pocket. As she was out of his sight, she stopped, pulled the letter out, and looked at it.

Then, she did the one thing she wasn’t supposed to.

She opened it.
